Church’s Statement
Greetings Friends—
When inspiration hits, we like to share projects that explore the intersection of Jesus and the real world around us. Lately, it seems our outreach work brings us more and more in touch with our limitations at loving our neighbors with mental illness. We simply fail these precious people constantly and are left to grieve our inability to embody the love of Christ to all our neighbors.
It's from a desire to love better, and to understand the journey of mental illness, that we present this collection. We found ourselves moved by Rev. Mary Button’s many Stations of the Cross series, but especially by her work with mental illness themes from 2015.
Overall, there are 14 stations in Rev. Button’s collection. Space only allows us to show 10 on our front lawn, but all 14 are presented on our website and can also be seen on Mary Button’s page here.
It’s important to note this collection deals with disruptive themes including suicide and adverse experiences with mental health treatment. We know the love of God to also be disruptive, finding us right in our limitations, grief, and struggle, and holding us close in our hopelessness. As all Stations of the Cross collections remind us, God knows suffering and despair also. Including the difficult content, this collection adeptly illustrates the sustaining nature of love, be it from God, therapists, health care workers, family, and friends.
We get to carry each other.
What do you think? We’d love to hear your feedback. Feel free to email your thoughts.
Peace be with you.
