Everyone is invited to a reception to honor Margaret “Sis” Dakan for her 100th birthday on Sunday, December 6, following the 11 a.m. service. We will also honor Margie Conover, who turned 100 on February 15. Margie and Sis were both confirmed at Phinney on December 1, 1929!
One year ago I wrote this for Tower Echoes: “We have an exciting anniversary coming up. In 2015 Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church will be 100 years old! […] This is an amazing community. Our current outreach and mission is built on the foundation of those beginnings 100 years ago. God is at work at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church, and we look forward to our celebration of past, present, and future.”
Our year began on All Saints Sunday last year — November 2, 2014, and will finish on All Saints Day — Sunday, November 1, 2015. Along the way we have learned about Phinney’s history through Luci Baker Johnson’s excellent weekly Centennial Communiqué. You’ve all brought photos and memories to add to the Holy History Wall in the Fellowship Hall, pages of history that will be placed in scrapbooks by Rosalyn Breen and Leslie Caceres so that we can look back from time to time and remember where we’ve been. Our history has been woven through our worship and music life this year, and Beth Ann Bonnecroy and Valerie Shields have been key in setting just the right tone for celebration. The entire Phinney staff has been tremendous — Darren Hochstedler, Christina Bogar, Patrick Meagher, Nancy Monelli, and Bryon Hansen have all contributed not only wonderful support, but have also added new and creative ideas to the whole event. From monthly Adult Forums to the God’s Work. Our Hands Sunday, we have looked back and looked forward, all in this amazing community called Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church.
The anniversary celebration service on May 3 was the centerpiece of the year. The church was full of Phinney members and friends from long ago and from right now who joined together in song and spirit to our shared commitment of the renewal of our life together. It was a wonderful day.
All year I’ve been calling the 100th Anniversary Committee the best committee in the universe! It has been remarkable — great ideas and great energy combined to make all these events possible. Here is the list of the committee that worked on this anniversary year: Luci Baker Johnson, Katie Bennett, John Breen, Rosalynn Breen, David Cress, Jo-Ann Cress, Janet Deters, Roberta Diesner, Shelley Ellstrom, Pastor Bryon Hansen, Signe Roscoe. Erin Milliren Baker and Virginia Schafer were also part of the committee before they moved away, and we are so grateful to Ellen Goforth for her work on the Holy History Wall. And huge thanks go to Walter Zamojski, who recorded it all in photos and video.
Our renewal as a community of God’s grace on this Ridge has been part of all our remembering. Our new altar table and the calling of another pastor mark this renewal and lead us all in hope. May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. ~ Romans 15:13
