Baby Spring
by Patrick Meagher

All things came into being through Jesus, and without Jesus not one thing came into being. What has come into being in Jesus was life, and the life was the light of all people. – John 1:3–4

It’s not without meaning that this unique time of anxiety, uncertainty, and social distancing is unfolding during the beginning of spring. A few days of splendid weather after a long dark winter has brought this home all the more. These days life springs from every bit of dirt, sleeping branch, and even from moss growing on concrete. I took a stroll in some secluded nature yesterday, and the sermon was very uplifting. The rhythm of creation continued unfazed by a mere global pandemic. The Earth is strong. I didn’t realize how much I needed to hear this reassuring good news!

Today I think about the phrase, “without Jesus not one thing came into being.” As our natural world regenerates around us as it always has, where are you hearing unexpected sermons that remind you of the truth of God’s unmovable presence? As our daily routines are suspended, how are you connecting with the life-giving presence of Jesus in a new way? Anxiety comes on quickly, but peace and new life comes into being perfectly slowly like a green shoot from a seed. Hang in there, it’s coming!
