The Anti-Slavery Movement in America as Christian Witness
The radical Antislavery Movement of the 19th Century was the first great social movement demanding racial justice in American history. Join Steve Pfaff for a discussion of this movement that was Christian in inspiration but went beyond the confines of conventional religion. Insisting on the spiritual equality of the races and the sexes, activist spiritual virtuosi like the Grimke sisters and Theodore Weld called on fellow Americans to lives of active holiness that would overcome the “national sins” of slavery and racism. The movement helped to define what it means to take moral positions in public life and has lasting implications for how we approach Christian witness today.
